Up to 2,000 people in Hamburg celebrated the dismissal of the city-state's controversial Interior Minister Ronald Schill on Thursday evening. Around 780 police were deployed to oversee the demonstration after complaints were made from neighborhood residents and fireworks were set off. Some participants were reported to have thrown bottles at the police, but there were no injuries, according to the authorities, who detained 40 demonstrators and arrested three others. Mayor Ole von Beust had fired Schill earlier in the day for purportedly threatening to out him publicly as a homosexual.
