The international community is calling for calm after relations between Saudi Arabia and its regional rival Iran reach a new low. Saudi diplomats in Tehran have been recalled and Saudi Arabia is expelling all Iranian diplomats from the kingdom.
Fighting has been raging in the eastern Saudi Arabian city of Awamiya for months. Entire neighborhoods have been destroyed, and Riyadh's heavy-handed approach toward its Shiite minority has escalated the situation.
Kuwaiti authorities have captured 12 convicted terrorists with alleged ties to Iran and Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah. Shiites accuse the country's Sunni rulers of politically and legally discriminating against them.
President Vladimir Putin has ordered US diplomatic missions in Russia to reduce staff by 755 people. The move came in response to a new US sanctions package against Moscow that was passed by the US Congress.
The Saudi-led group boycotting Qatar has agreed to a 48-hour extension proposed by mediator Kuwait as part of efforts to resolve the row. The German foreign minister has meanwhile arrived in the Gulf region for talks.
