Its cornerstone was laid in 1882. A year later the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí took over the project. He took inspiration from nature for his design vocabulary. The roof is supported by columns that grow toward the sky like trees. Originally Antoni Gaudí envisaged just 15 years to finish it. In the end he worked on it until his death in 1926. He was laid to rest in the crypt of the uncompleted structure.
Funding for the building comes solely from donations and entrance fees. The monumental work is expected to be finished by June 10, 2026, to mark the hundredth anniversary of Gaudí's death.
