S. Africa’s unions brought most of the country to a standstill on Wednesday. They called a general strike to protest against the proposed national minimum wage of $1.60 per hour and changes to the labour law.
The biggest union group in South Africa, COSATU, has held nationwide rallies against corruption in the government. Many are calling for President Jacob Zuma to step down.
South Africans are celebrating Freedom Day - the anniversary of the first post-apartheid elections - amid deepening rivalry in the ruling ANC between supporters and opponents of President Jacob Zuma.
