Ruling Party Ahead in Indonesian Elections

Indonesians cast their votes in parliamentary elections on Thursday. The final results are only expected in a month's time. Usually reliable "quick counts" based on samples of votes taken from polling stations across the country showed that the trend was consistent.

Projections put President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's Democrat Party in the lead with about 20 percent of the vote on Thursday. Former president Megawati Sukarnoputri's PDI-P and Golkar, the ruling party under former dictator Suharto, followed with both expected to reach about 15 percent. Voting across Indonesia was largely peaceful -- even in the restive Aceh province. Only the eastern Papua region saw some violence, with five people dying before the polling stations opened.
