It‘s been a difficult start to this year's Dakar Rally. Bad weather lead to the opening stage being cancelled. But rally racing legend Sebastien Loeb bid his time, waiting to start – and win - his first-ever Dakar stage.
Qatar's Nasser Al-Attiyah has won the first stage of the Dakar Rally in the Peruvian town of Pisco. Nine-time rally world champion Sebastian Loeb of France endured a torrid opening day, finishing in 29th place.
Stephane Peterhansel said his latest Dakar win was the sweetest of his career as he held off the challenge of compatriot Sebastien Loeb to claim his 13th title. Peterhansel was 5min 13sec clear of Peugeot teammate Loeb.
Sebastien Loeb took advantage of a stoppage for Peugeot teammate Stephane Peterhansel to win Stage 8 and take the overall lead. However, a massive mudslide has forced the cancellation of the ninth stage.
The Frenchman was lightning-quick in the second stage in the Dakar Rally as he scorched the field by over a minute. This, combined with his sixth-place finish in the first stage, has given him the overall lead.
