When refugees fleeing Syria set off on their journey to northern Europe, there are no guarantees they will make it as far as Austria and Germany. Reports suggest that four boats sank in Greek waters on Wednesday, with dozens missing.

The Libyan coast guard has saved 200 people in two rescue operations off western Libya, but found that dozens more have drowned. In a separate effort, French NGO SOS Mediterranee said it rescued another 400 migrants.
A Bundeswehr vessel has rescued 102 migrants off the coast of Libya. In a dramatic few days of rescue missions, a further 50 migrants were airlifted after being stranded in the Aegean Sea between Turkey and Greece.
Thousands of people, many of them children, with a right to rejoin family in Germany are stuck in Greece. Berlin blames Greek inefficiency, while critics say Germany doesn't try to expedite the refugees' arrival.
