After a day of peaceful protest, Macedonia has opened its border for a limited time to allow Syrians and Iraqis through who had been stranded in Greece. But desperation is growing amid the long lines and shortages.
The Turkish president has threatened to "clear Turkey's southern borders of terror" by targeting a Kurdish-held enclave in Syria. Turkish artillery has been shelling the area.
186,644 asylum seekers were registered last year. That's down more than 100,000 from 2016 - the Germany Interior Ministry says the massive numbers from the height of the crisis have been "overcome."
