New Iranian President Hassan Rohani has said he is willing to mediate in peace talks between the Syrian government and rebel fighters. But the opposition has rejected the proposal from one of Assad's closest allies.
Turkey says it has "never used chemical weapons" after claims it used a toxic gas during an offensive in Afrin, Syria. Local doctors had been quoted as saying they treated people for exposure to chemical gases.
French President Emmanuel Macron has warned the Syrian regime that the use of chemical weapons will result in French retaliation. The Syrian government has reponded saying it does not possess such weapons.
Washington's top diplomat has accused Moscow of breaching "its commitments" to destroy Syria's chemical weapons stockpiles, following reports of a new attack near Damascus. Syria has dismissed the reports as "lies."
The Syrian opposition and forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad are not the only groups fighting in the conflict. Other countries have also intervened to pursue their own interests.
