Qatar is the richest company in the world per capita. Its wealth comes from resources, mainly natural gas. Some of its profits are invested in German companies. Qatar's neighboring countries have accused it of funding terrorist organizations.
In a DW interview, Qatar's foreign minister has slammed Saudi Arabia for "destabilizing the region." The minister said Riyadh is using what it calls security concerns as a "smoke screen" to harm Qatar's economy.
Qatari and Saudi leaders have spoken on the phone to discuss the ongoing diplomatic crisis. But hopes for a breakthrough quickly fizzled as the two countries got into a spat over the details of the call.
Despite a deepening diplomatic crisis with its neighbors, Qatar says it will increase natural gas production by a third. The announcement is seen as an act of defiance against sanctions by Saudi Arabia and others.
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has hailed the renewed cooperation between Riyadh and Baghdad at a Saudi-organized summit. He also called on Iran to recall paramilitaries from Iraqi territory.
