The G20 meeting of finance ministers has got underway in Baden Baden. Topics for discussion include tax evasion and the regulation of financial markets. It runs until Saturday.
Outgoing German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble has warned against growing anti-free trade rhetoric. Without naming Trump and his America First policy, he said the world needs "more openness rather than less."
Wolfgang Schäuble is one of the most influential German politicians never to have been chancellor. The challenges that he will face as president of Germany's parliament include the far-right AfD.
US finance officials have refused to sign a commitment to free trade, breaking a decade-long tradition and effectively preventing any deal. Action against climate change has also been dropped following US intervention.
The G20 has failed to agree a joint position on free trade at the Baden-Baden summit. This is a harbinger of how difficult it may be to strike international agreements with the US going forward, says Henrik Böhme.
