European Commission President Romano Prodi has praised Spain's decision to pull its troops out of Iraq as soon as possible. "With this decision, Spain has returned to our position," Prodi said at a meeting of center-left Italian opposition parties critical of the United States-led invasion in Iraq. "The divide that prevented Europe from having a common position is being sorted out," he added. Prodi also said that the United Nations must take control of the situation in Iraq. After his mandate in Brussels finishes in October, the Italian is expected to return to national politics. ( EUobserver.com)
