On September 19 the work “The Traffic” by Turkish composer Mehmet Erhan Tanman – a composition commission of Deutsche Welle – will make its debut at the Beethovenhalle Bonn.
The German international broadcaster will present “The Traffic” as part of the Orchestra Campus of Deutsche Welle (DW) and Beethovenfest Bonn. The commissioned work will be premiered by the Turkish National Youth Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by its artistic director Cem Mansur.
"Erhan Tanman’s composition is inspired by the tremendous vitality of the metropolis of Istanbul. In ’The Traffic’, the road traffic and the city's diverse background noise stand for its exuberant dynamism," says Dr. Gero Schliess, Head of Program Projects, Promotions, Partnerships at DW.
The Turkish National Youth Philharmonic Orchestra was formed in 2006. The musicians, aged between 16 and 22, study at the renowned music conservatories of Adana, Ankara, Antalya, Bursa, Edirne, Eskisehir, Izmir, Istanbul and Mersin.
The audio recording of the concert will be available as a podcast via dw.de/beethoven as well as on CD. Partner stations of Deutsche Welle in Turkey, Latin America, Russia and the USA will broadcast the concert.
Mehmet Erhan Tanman, born in Istanbul in 1989, studied at the state Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University (MSFAU) after finishing high school. There he graduated in both piano and composition. He had his first concert as a composer at the age of 16 with the MSFAU State Conservatory Symphony Orchestra conducted by Erdem Çöloğlu. More recently he worked with orchestras and ensembles from Europe and Turkey. The Presidential Symphony Orchestra, MSFAU Wind & Percussion Symphony Orchestra, Sonus Brass Ensemble, Triage Modern Music Ensemble and the La Mer String Quartet played his works in Germany, Turkey, Austria and Switzerland. He composes most of his works on commission.
The composition commission
Deutsche Welle has this year awarded a composition commission for the twelfth time. The commissions are given to young composers of a partner country selected for the Orchestra Campus by Deutsche Welle and Beethovenfest Bonn. Eleven youth orchestras from DW target regions have been guests in Bonn since 2000. The partner countries were China, Georgia, Turkey, Poland, Ukraine, South Africa, Egypt, Russia, Vietnam, Brazil and Iraq.
As the official media partner to the Beethovenfest Bonn, DW makes it a worldwide event at DW.DE/BEETHOVEN with audio in German, Turkish, English and other languages, and TV coverage in German, English, Arabic and Spanish.
