Police have clashed with hundreds of migrants and refugees camped out at the village of Idomeni near the Macedonian border. The Greek government has ordered them to move to organized shelters, but many say they won't budge until the border reopens.
A boat carrying up to 22 people on board has capsized near the island of Agathonissi, killing six children. The Greek migration minister has called on authorities to "implement safe procedures and safe routes."
A migrant rescue ship has been seized in Italy for refusing to hand over rescued migrants to Libya. The NGO said that would have been illegal, and insisted that the rescue took place legally in international waters.
A Turkish man was sentenced to jail for trying to smuggle 51 migrants into Germany last year. The court ruled the man was indifferent to the health and safety of the men, women and children held in the back of his truck.
Just as it did the previous year, Germany handled more asylum applications in 2017 than all fellow EU members combined. The way Germany interprets the Dublin agreement suggests the discrepancy is set to continue.
