Carnival in the Rhineland
Thousands of Germans dressed in colorful and creative costumes have braved the cold and rainy weather on Saturday to mark the beginning of carnival season, also known as the "fifth season" in the country.
Regional festivals are a highlight of the year for many towns and cities in Germany - and for some they play an integral role in shaping identity. What Oktoberfest is to Bavaria, Carnival is to the Rhineland… and in the Sauerland the big event is the Schützenfest, or marksmen's festival.
In the Rhineland, carnival is called the 'fifth season'. Today thousands of people in Cologne celebrated the beginning of the carnival period, which goes until February, in Germany.
