Although Sebastien Loeb crossed the finish line first, fellow Peugeot driver Stephane Peterhansel’s time was adjusted to reflect the fact he had stopped to aid a motorbike driver he had run over.
Peugeot completed another 1-2-3 finish in stage 10. Stephane Peterhansel, who initially came third after a crash that left a motorcyclist with a broken leg, was awarded the win and took the lead from Sebastien Loeb.
The favorite, Nasser Al-Attiyah, has won the first stage of the Dakar Rally, which will take the drivers through three South American countries. However, Al-Attiyah had to overcome mechanical trouble to do so.
Stephane Peterhansel said his latest Dakar win was the sweetest of his career as he held off the challenge of compatriot Sebastien Loeb to claim his 13th title. Peterhansel was 5min 13sec clear of Peugeot teammate Loeb.
A narrow win in stage 11 is unlikely to be enough to keep Sebastien Loeb's Dakar hopes alive. His Peugeot teammate Stephane Peterhansel came second on Friday and has a healthy overall lead.
