A cable car whose dramatic breakdown last September forced 33 tourists to spend the night stranded - suspended high over the French Alps - is to reopen on Thursday
Passengers have been rescued after a series of cable cars over the Mont Blanc massif in the French Alps stopped at an altitude of 3,800 meters (12,468 feet). At least 30 people had to spend the night high up in the air.
As night fell, rescuers were forced to abandon their work until dawn, when they took the last 33 people stranded in cable cars. Despite blankets, the cold was the most difficult part of the midair stay.
Two Lithuanian mountain climbers have died in an avalanche near Chamonix, in the French Alps. Officials have urged precaution and warned those in the area of further avalanches.
