Our Beautiful Planet

May 12, 2017

In Germany, spring is a season of sunshine and showers. The moments they interact can be the most beautiful - like this rainbow over Poenitzer Lake in northern Germany, just a few kilometers from the Baltic Sea.

When sunlight is refracted by water droplets, we are able to see the full spectrum of colors which makes up white light.

Rainbows often follow in the wake of a storm. In this image from Schleswig-Holstein, Germany’s northernmost state, colors emerge just as the sun begins to shine through the rainclouds.

Poenitzer Lake is in the picturesque ‘Holstein Switzerland’ area, a nature park made up of hills, lakes, and forest. The region is an important tourist destination, with lakes like this one popular spots for camping and fishing.
