US president Obama has warned that discriminating Muslims harms the fight against extremism. He called Omar Mateen, the gunman who murdered 49 people, a homegrown killer. Mateen seems to have been a regular visitor to the gay nightclub he attacked.
The terror group says that the man who killed eight people and injured 12 is their "soldier." However, IS has been known to claim attacks to which it has no direct link, such as last year's deadly shooting in Orlando.
