Oldest German Turns 110

German government officials announced on Monday that Germany's oldest person is a woman living in Berlin, who turned 110 on Tuesday. The data on Germany's most senior citizens is collected so that the German president can extend his congratulations to centenarians. President Köhler sends a birthday card to every citizen who turns 100. From their 105th birthday on, they enjoy annual congratulations from their president. This year, the presidential office congratulated 3118 German citizens on the occasion of their century marks. According to official statistics, 156 Germans turned 105 this year; 70 celebrated their 106th birthdays; 22 turned 107; 13 turned 108; and five Germans made it all the way to their 109th birthday party.
