After three days of intense political talks on the region's various conflicts, Obama ended his Middle East tour playing tourist. The American President spent two hours viewing the ancient ruins of Petra in Jordan.
Angela Merkel is set to meet with leaders in Jordan and Lebanon. The two countries have the world's highest number of refugees per capita — an issue expected to be a central theme of the German chancellor's trip.
Gaza medics have said four people have been killed and some 600 wounded during rallies along the border fence. The demonstrations coincided with Al-Quds Day, an anti-Israeli day of protests held across the Middle East.
The deadly protests on the Gaza border may have died down, but Moshe Zimmermann doesn't have much hope for peace. He told DW that Israel's government benefits from the situation and called on Germany to be more critical.
In May 1948, Israel declared its independence. Palestinians such as Hafida Khatib refer to this moment as the "Nakba," or "catastrophe." With her family, Hafida fled to Lebanon — a country that has never felt like home.
