New Maldivian President Sworn In

11/11/08November 11, 2008

After nearly three decades of single-party rule in the Maldives, the country now has its first democratically-elected president. Pro-democracy activist Mohamed Nasheed was sworn in on Tuesday after defeating former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in last week’s elections. Nasheed had several spells in jail as a political prisoner under Gayoom’s regime.
