King Ludwig II loved the mountains and often went hiking in the Füssen area. This is where he liked to escape his demanding job in government, and so at the end of the 19th century, this was the spot he chose to have Neuschwanstein Castle built. In the end he only got to spend a few months in the finished castle, before he died in mysterious circumstances.

Today Neuschwanstein Castle is no longer a quiet retreat. Some 1.5 million tourists come here every year to see the fairytale castle and enjoy the fabulous views.
