Nepal Maoists to Fall Short of Majority

April 21, 2008

Nepal's election commission has announced that the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) has won half of the seats in the Constituent Assembly up for grabs by direct election. However, directly-elected seats account for less than half of the total seats in the 601-seat Assembly. The others are chosen by proportional representation. Experts project the ex-rebels are likely to fall short of the 301 seats necessary for a simple majority.
