Myanmar President Htin Kyaw has announced his surprise resignation following reports of ill health. He is a close ally of de-facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who is constitutionally barred from the presidency.

Those released included the elderly, people in ill health and drug offenders. Two Reuters journalists facing 14 years in prison for possessing secret official documents were not included in the amnesty.
Bob Geldof has returned his Freedom of the City of Dublin as a protest against Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who also holds the honor. The Irish singer labeled Suu Kyi a "handmaiden to genocide."
