Governments and aid agencies are voicing their concern as thousands of Rohingya continue to flee violence in Myanmar. The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, is pleading for help in accommodating Rohingya refugees arriving in Bangladesh in "worrying" numbers.
Pope Francis has so far failed to mention the Rohingya on his week-long trip to Myanmar and Bangladesh. At the Rohingya refugee camps Cox's Bazar, those familiar with the pontiff are hoping he will address their plight.
Myanmar's security forces may be guilty of genocide against the Rohingya minority, the UN's top human rights official said before a special session of the UN Human Rights Council. People are still fleeing their homes.
The Catholic pontiff used the word Rohingya when addressing refugees in Dhaka, who crossed from Myanmar into Bangladesh. He had been urged not to use the word during his earlier stay in Myanmar.
Pope Francis has rounded off his trip to Asia by visiting a Bangladeshi orphanage and home for the disabled run by Mother Teresa's order. It followed the pontiff's anticipated encounter with the Rohingya Muslim refugees.
