Authorities in El Salvador are pinning their hopes on a fish to stop the spread of the Zika virus. Sambo fish feast on the larvae of mosquitoes, including those carrying the virus.
Rights group Human Rights Watch says Brazil needs to tackle the root causes of the Zika outbreak to avoid a recurrence. It says far too many people still live in conditions that favor the spead of the virus.
Myanmar has detected its first case of the Zika infection. A pregnant foreign woman has been diagnosed with the mosquito-borne virus.
Vietnam has confirmed its first case of microcephaly thought to have been caused by the Zika virus. The country is the second in the region after Thailand to be affected in this way by the disease.
Health authorities in the United States have declared a public health emergency in Puerto Rico in response to the Zika outbreak. More than 10,000 people have contracted the virus in the tiny US territory.
