Merkel's Foreign Policy

DW-WORLD readers were at loggerheads about the future of German foreign policy -- and Germany -- assuming conservative candidate Angela Merkel becomes the country's next chancellor after the Sept. 18 general election.

Will Merkel get cosy with Bush as chancellor?

It would be a mistake for Merkel to model a government after the one of George Bush. America is in turmoil because of his policies and administration. If Merkel does indeed try to be like Bush, it will be her downfall, and a disaster for Germany. -- Arden Reinhardt Knapp

Well, Angela Merkel can have our security adviser free of charge. In fact, we'll gladly give her our president, his VP and his full cabinet too, along with our congress. Do I think Merkel will make dramatic changes in Germany's foreign policies? Of course she will. She'll kiss and suck up to Bush just like Tony Blair. Or maybe even more so. This is not the time to put someone like Merkel into office, that's for sure. -- Bryan M., USA

If Merkel is elected, she will obey what her US masters instruct her to do. That's the way with conformists. Remember, German spirit still is enemy-occupied land. -- Luis Iñarra, Mexico

First, Frau Merkel should be interested in improving Germany first and not worrying about the US. Good relations are fine but one's own country comes first. For too many years America would nod its head and Germany would wag its tail. That's not the way it should be. Equal, something the Americans cannot accept. -- Erni Stetz, Florida, USA

Not only can she improve on US relations, she will uncover the real Germany, once proud and strong. The true Germans will vote for her. I think most German people know Schröder has really made a big mess not only with US but other countries as well. I hope Angela Merkel wins by a landslide. -- Marie, USA

Why don't you "unbiased" journalists knock off the snide anti-Merkel campaign? It is a quite transparent attack on a woman who has overcome both her gender and her eastern origins. If she were a male leftist you would be fawning on such a politician. Lighten up DW, she may soon be your boss. -- JL Ronish

Being at the disadvantage of having loaned out the volume from my law library that specifically deals with the subject at hand -- uptight politicians assuming consent where the contrary is true -- most certainly, we could dig up something from the dark ages of Teutonic law relating to petty theft. I'm not saying that Ms. Merkel should be hung by a single foot from the church steeple, knickers evident, but ..., well maybe I am. -- yuri
