As German Chancellor Angela Merkel thanked various organizations for their support during the refugee crisis, she attributed the drop in refugee numbers to the ceasefire in Syria. But the closing of the Balkan route is more likely responsible.
186,644 asylum seekers were registered last year. That's down more than 100,000 from 2016 - the Germany Interior Ministry says the massive numbers from the height of the crisis have been "overcome."
