At the Bavarian CSU’s party convention German Chancellor Angela Merkel reiterated that will be no cap on the number of refugees entering Germany. Though she suggested some changes to refugee policies, CSU hardliners were unimpressed.
Germany's Free Democrats have called off coalition talks with Angela Merkel's CDU/CSU bloc and the Greens. The German president is set to make an announcement on Monday afternoon after meeting with the chancellor.
The chancellor has said that her CDU party, the Greens and the business-friendly FDP will have an initial agreement ready this week. It is nearly two months since Germany held its general election.
German coalition talks have continued as parties clash on migration and the environment. The Merkel-led conservative block, the Greens and the market-friendly FDP had until Sunday evening to reach common ground.
Preliminary coalition talks collapsed between Chancellor Merkel and potential partners over the weekend. After speaking with President Steinmeier, Merkel said she was ready to lead her party to fresh elections.
