The German chancellor Angela Merkel has tried to play down a possible trade war between Europe and China. During a visit by premier Li Keqiang, Merkel said the EU and China should resolve their differences at the negotiating table.
The threat of steeper US tariffs on EU-assembled vehicles could lead to a global trade war. German automakers, which produce more vehicles in the US than they export there, are in the Trump administration's crosshairs.
