Meet... Lizette Feris

As Project Manager for the Media Information Literacy (MIL) and Community Information project lines, Lizette works directly with project partners to ensure goals are achieved through successful relationship management.

Why is MIL important in Namibia?

Media and Information Literacy is important as it provides Namibians with the knowledge, skills and attitude to demand quality information which is key to democracy. It increases participation in public dialogue and enhances citizens' contributions to political and socioeconomic development of the country.

What is most rewarding in your work on MIL?

Namibia faces many challenges and for me, most notably critical thinking skills among citizens. So it is always rewarding to know that trainees are learning and able to apply their knowledge and develop new skills. Here are only some of their comments:
"I now understand how media can be informative and manipulating at the same time!"
"I learned a crucial skill which is to reflect on media messages!"   
"I was impressed that I can use my smartphone to record news. We interviewed the street vendors with smartphones!"

You just won the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders. Congratulaions! What are your expectations?

Thank you. During my 6 weeks at Dartmouth College I will like to be a sponge to absorb as much as possible and network effectively with organizations and businesses in the U.S. Upon my return to Namibia I will use my knowledge, skills and contacts to strengthen MIL and Community Information in Namibia.
