Luxembourg: Opportunities for Illegal Immigrants

Luxembourg is about to crack down on the employment of illegal immigrants. But before doing so, the country is issuing more residence permits.

A one-off legalization campaign for non-EU citizens currently living and working illegally in the grand duchy runs to the end of February. The hurdles for getting a residence permit are high. Only people who can prove they have been working in Luxembourg for at least nine months and have an open-ended work contract are eligible. In future, employers of foreign nationals living illegally in the country will risk prison sentences of up to a year.
