Local Gov't Agrees to Sharia for Swat Valley

16/02/09February 16, 2009

The government in Pakistan's North West Frontier Province agreed to implement Islamic law in the vast region of Malakand, which includes the troubled Swat Valley, on Monday. The controversial decision came after negotiations with the pro-Taliban cleric Maulana Sufi Mohammad. The authorities said the move would help restore peace in the region where the local Taliban militants have intensified their violent campaign in recent months.
