A grey city goes green

Essen, in the heartland of Germany's Ruhr area, was once the country's industrial hub. But since the decline of coal mining, the entire region has been working to reinvent itself as a center of culture and environmental activity. Its efforts are paying off: Essen has been designated European Green Capital 2017.
