Polar research doesn’t just take place in the continent of Antarctica. The German research ship Polarstern is an icebreaker built to roam the polar seas. The scientists on board have often discovered many previously-unknown species in the cavities of the ice, including rotifers, flatworms and copepods.

But climate experts warn that in a few decades, the Arctic ice likely to melt completely during the summer—and that would spell the end of this important ecosystem.
