Lifelines - Andreas Altmann - The Rage Within

The travel journalist Andreas Altmann is known for his provocative style of writing. Now Altmann has written a book about his childhood – a critical look at his own past and German history.

Andreas Altmann spent his childhood in a small Bavarian town Altötting, a Catholic place of pilgrimage. His violent father, a former Nazi had returned home after the war with psychological problems. He abused both his wife and son. A youth spent void of love and filled with fear, humiliation and hatred. But Andreas Altmann survived it all.

It took him almost 40 years, countless therapies and many failed attempts at various careers - actor, parking attendant, taxi driver and a financial advisor - before he found his calling as a travel reporter.

30.12.2013 DW Dokumentation und Reportage Andreas Altmann 03

Andreas Altmann lives in Paris

He quickly became one of the most sought after travel writers in Germany working for GEO and DIE ZEIT. His reports from the most remote and dangerous parts of the world have won him many awards.

But it was only in 2011, age 60 that he was finally able to write about his childhood and what almost destroyed him in his bestselling book.
