Eight months after the murder of siblings Tom and Sonja, the two men responsible for the crime have been given life sentences in a court in the German city of Aachen. Addressing the hushed court, Judge Gerd Nohl referred to the killers, neighbors Markus Wirtz and Markus Lewendel from the children’s home town of Eschweiler, as the lowest form of life and added that they should be prevented from ever taking part in everyday life outside prison. The brother and sister, aged eleven and nine respectively, went missing on March 30. Their bodies were found days later in two separate locations.
