Law to Enforce Traineeships Ready by March

Germany's ruling Social Democratic Party (SPD) has said it will present draft legislation aimed at creating more traineeships at German companies by the beginning of March. According to the SPD's parliamentary group leader Franz Müntefering, the new law -- which would allow the government to impose fines on companies that cut back on the number of spots for trainees -- would be a piece of legislation that even the opposition-dominated upper house of parliament couldn't stop. However, Müntefering also said that exceptions could be granted to entire branches of the economy should labor relations partners come up with a plan to ensure a sufficient number of traineeships. Reports released by two major German industrial organizations last year said not enough young people were receiving on the job training, as more and more companies cut traineeships to save on costs.
