A referendum on independence has taken place in Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish region. More than three million people cast their ballots in the non-binding vote. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has said the map of Iraq is "endangered."
Turkey is threatening a military offensive in Syria against the Kurdish-held enclave of Afrin as it bombards US-backed forces there. The US has signalled it will continue to provide support to the Kurdish dominated SDF.
