Gold for Koch

August 7, 2015

At the swimming world championships, Bronte Campbell came out tops in a sibling rivalry in the 100-meter women's freestyle. Meanwhile German Marco Koch treated himself to an indulgence after making a bit of history.

Marco Koch claimed Germany's first pool gold medal at the Swimming World Championships in Kazan, Russia with a fine display in the 200-meter breaststroke. It was the first time a German man had won this event.

Koch's time of 2:07.76 was shy of the world record, upon which he was setting his sights. But that was the only cloud on the horizon of the German, who beat out American Kevin Cordes and Hungary's Daniel Gyuarta.

The affable Koch, who describes himself as being on a "vegan plus meat" diet, knew just how he was going to celebrate his gold medal.

"Now that's it's over I'm going to treat myself," Koch said. "I think I'll be off to Burger King."

In one of Friday's other highlights, Australia's Bronte Campbell beat out her sister Kate - two years the elder - to win the 100-meter freestyle. Her time in what fans dubbed a battle between the "sisters of speed" was 52.52

Kate Campbell had to settle for bronze with Sarah Sjöström of Sweden taking silver.
