Michael Ballhaus filmed with famed directors like Martin Scorsese and Rainer Werner Fassbinder. The cinematographer from Berlin was adored in Hollywood for his creative techniques. He has passed away at age 81.
Ballhaus was known for his work on Academy Award winning films "Goodfellas" and "The Departed." He also served as the Head of Jury at the 40th Berlinale Film Festival.
In 2016 he received a Berlinale Golden Bear for lifetime achievement: Camera legend Michael Ballhaus. His images grace the films of R.W. Fassbinder and of many Hollywood blockbusters. KINO met up with him for a chat.
