KATRIN and the secret of the neutrino

Neutrinos are elementary particles that are one of science’s great mysteries. Physicists want to know whether neutrinos have mass or not. KATRIN (the "Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino Experiment") plans to provide answers.

They aim to prove the existence of the neutrino, but it’s no easy task. Using a theory proposed by Einstein and the knowledge they’ve gained about the tritium atom, they’ve created the set-up for an experiment to generate super-fast electrons. Discovering more about the elementary particles could help to explain the nature of the cosmos. After the Big Bang, neutrinos could have been key to the formation of all matter in the universe.
