I often joke that I am more German than my German husband, and he more American than me. While it may be true in some ways, it really doesn't matter. Cultural identity is overrated: I'm just Kate - not the product of my geography. Rather than trying to define German identity, let's have the courage to leave it vague. That gives individuals the room to grow.
