The European Union has its first president. At a meeting in Brussels, EU leaders picked Herman van Rompoy, the Belgian Prime Minister to fill the post. Responsibility for foreign and security policy goes to Britain's Catherine Ashton. Both jobs were created under the Lisbon reform treaty and are aimed at boosting the standing of the European Union around the world.
