Syrian refugees in Iraq, Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan earning wages provided by Germany in order to keep them from coming to Europe. The program is called “Cash for Work” and the German Economics Ministry says 34,000 jobs have already been created.
German refugee helpers who guaranteed the living costs of Syrian refugees are being forced to pay back costs by job centers. Refugee organizations say people are being punished for showing humanity.
State interior ministers have agreed that the current ban on deporting Syrians back to their native country will remain in force for at least another year. Some states had proposed ending the ban in mid-2018.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier signed a multi-million dollar partnership with Ghana on his first trip to Africa since taking office. Germany hopes the accord might help curb migration to Europe.
