Thousands of refugees trying to reach Europe drown in the Mediterranean. Some congregations in Italy have raised funds for hundreds of Syrian refugee families to pay for their flights.
The German chancellor has offered aid to Lebanon as it struggles to cope with nearly 1 million Syrian refugees. She is hoping to reduce migrant arrivals to Europe by supporting countries near Syria.
The advertisement campaign showed migrants in life jackets as they were being rescued with Benetton's logo at the bottom. The Franco-German charity involved in the rescue has condemned the Italian clothing company.
Italy has remained firm in its decision to shut its ports to a ship carrying more than 600 migrants. But Rome insisted it is still willing to help asylum-seekers — under certain conditions.
The German chancellor says she wants to work with Italy to reduce the number of refugees entering the European Union. Merkel is facing a rebellion inside her governing conservative alliance over migration.
