Italy's parliament has voted in favor of sending the navy to the Libyan coast to help the coastguard there tackle people traffickers. Human rights organizations are concerned that this will only increase the suffering of migrants.
A migrant rescue ship has been seized in Italy for refusing to hand over rescued migrants to Libya. The NGO said that would have been illegal, and insisted that the rescue took place legally in international waters.
Eight migrants have died, scores rescued and dozens are missing after their rubber dinghy ran into trouble off the Libyan coast. One rescue charity said those picked up had been in the sea for several hours.
A truck transporting migrants has flipped over in the Libyan town of Bani Walid, killing at least 22 people. At least 79 people have been injured and the local hospital says the situation is "catastrophic."
The Libyan coast guard has saved 200 people in two rescue operations off western Libya, but found that dozens more have drowned. In a separate effort, French NGO SOS Mediterranee said it rescued another 400 migrants.
