Israel has pushed deep into the Gaza Strip on the first full day of its ground offensive against Hamas. There have been two main troop movements. The result: Gaza City has effectively been surrounded and Israeli infantry and tanks have advanced as far as the Mediterranean, cutting Gaza in half. Palestinian medics say at least 35 Palestinians have been killed -- most of them civilians. The Israeli side says one soldier has been killed and 31 wounded -- three seriously.
