Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has arrived in Turkey for talks with his counterpart in Istanbul, Abdullah Gul. It is the Iranian leader's first visit to Turkey since he came to power in 2005.

Thursday's visit is expected to focus on bilateral relations and Iran's nuclear program. Turkey's foreign minister Ali Babacan has offered to try and mediate in the deadlocked nuclear dispute between Iran and the West.

In June, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany offered a new package of incentives to Iran for it to stop its nuclear enrichment.

Turkey has repeatedly said it is not opposed to Iran's controversial nuclear program as long as it is for civil use.
